Sauron, like Melkor before him, looks to undermine the master that gave him everything he had for his own gain.Īs for Frodo and Sam, the metaphors for the Biblical love that David and Jonathan shared? For starters, Sam was enamored with Rosie Cotton, who he eventually married and impregnated, and on the slopes of Mount Doom he pined for her, not for Frodo. And as for Sauron? He sees Melkor as a source of power, a way to boost himself up in Melkor's service, but it should be clear that a being like Sauron who sacrificed everything to join Melkor would not be content to spend all of eternity as his glorified secretary. Melkor, to quote Gandalf in The Fellowship of the Ring, "does not share power". Sauron is an agent of Melkor, and is a means of conquering Middle-Earth. Melkor loves Sauron as if you or I would "love" a pencil the pencil is a means to an end for us and is appreciated as long as it is useful, but once that pencil breaks or is reduced to a stump it is thrown away without a second thought. He does not love Melkor in the way that we love, and the same can be said for Melkor. And as for Sauron, he clings to Melkor out of his own self-interest. He isn't concerned with a kingdom, he is looking to control the world itself. Melkor is in The Silmarillion a physical being in a physical world, but his ties to Iluvatar keep him from enjoying the physical world as the elves, dwarves, and men did. was an aphysical being depicted physically. He was for Tolkien's purposes a depiction of the Biblical Satan in his universe, and the devil, who never ate, slept, copulated, etc. Melkor lusted for power, and controlof Iluvatar's creation, aiming to write out the Creator from his Creation. That being said, Melkor and Sauron were not gay. I am merely an amateur student of Tolkien trying to maintain his vision for his work. If you are making gay fan art, no one is stopping you. However, after coming across a good deal of fan art on the alleged homosexual relationship between Melkor and Sauron, I felt the need to clarify some things. I am in no way asserting that to be gay is wrong. Feel free to agree/disagree, but let's be civil. I did not intend for this post to be a source of argument and bitterness. This was written on the basis of my being a stickler for Middle-Earth canon, and also as a means of making a topic of conversation and discussion.
